Chapter Fourteen

“Closed in the middle of the work week, are we?”

Mona’s head shot up as she walked, the words stopping her in her tracks. Trip stood just outside her magic shop, leaning against a lamp post. He nodded at two women passing by, his smile making them titter like birds. Then the wizard turned that well-oiled smile of his on Mona and she wished he would just melt away and ooze down a sewer drain. Inclining his head towards the CLOSED sign on her front door, he chuckled and rubbed his stubbly chin. “Might as well post a sign that reads Going Out of Business.”

“Are you threatening me?” Her voice held icicles and she was tempted to magically produce one so she could stab him in the heart with it. Really tempted.

“Come now, Mona. We both know you weren’t doing well before I ever opened my own shop. And now that those seeking magical remedies have a more sophisticated place to go for their needs, why would they ever bother to come here?” He held his hands out, his shoulders shrugging as if it was all so obvious.

Snake. A serpent in a man’s skin, is what he is. Though she knew he was right, she would never admit defeat to him. True, she held no love for this city. Picking up and moving on when sales were slow was what she had always done, never staying in one place more than a handful of years. But this guy seriously pissed her off. She wouldn’t run away with her tail between her legs, not if it meant he would be laughing at her. She would stay here longer just to spite the bastard.

If she could. She was barely making enough to eat now and her savings for pursuing the cure to Rhiann’s curse were running dry. At this point, she had no idea what to do. Leaving seemed like the best option.

Shouldering him out of her way, she unlocked the door to her shop with her magic, entered, and slammed the door shut behind her, locking it. Any wizard worth his salt would be able to unlock it as she had, but he didn’t bother. No need to come inside and harass her further. His message had gotten through.

Candles lit themselves as Mona stormed through the narrow aisles back to her own room, cursing under her breath. She flung her cloak on the floor, angry and miserable. Glancing at Rhiann’s prone form on the bed, she wished it were dark already so she could talk to her. She needed advice about this Trip jerk.

And about Gertrude. She could still taste the sweet icing on her tongue, still smell the donuts as they burned while Gertrude stared into her eyes. The spell should have kept the girl from lingering, giving her mind a push to go check on her food, but after that shock of magic they both felt, Gertrude just stood there blinking at Mona, her eyes going misty with affection. As much as Mona loved the look she was receiving, it also kind of freaked her out.
